Escaping_
Photography_
In Escaping_Photography_, a selection of works is presented that each has a unique and experimental approach to the photographic image. This includes both techniques using a camera as well as works where alternative analogue and/or digital methods are used to achieve the result.
Walter Benjamin’s analysis in his essay “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” still holds true today. L’art-pour-l’art is juxtaposed with art that becomes charged with meaning and therefore political, the former being put in the spectrum of far right politics and the latter in its leftwing counterpart. The works selected for this exhibition balance the cord between these two polar opposites and an interpretation towards each direction should always be a possibility.
The question visual artists face deal with in an age of instant reproduction is the process of reapplying and reinventing the respective media in which they are working.
Escaping_Photography_ refers to the process of the artists moving away from the medium of the classic photographic image. The spectrum of works reveals this move can go into a variety of different directions, from collage and painting techniques, over explorations within the technical limitations of photography, to the use of new ways to achieve a singular “pseudophotographic” image with alternative techniques.
On another level, Escaping_Photography_ also refers to the viewer experience. The works do not offer any social commentary or reflection on contemporary life. Instead, they offer an alternate world into which to escape.
Escaping_Photography_ is what is shared between the artists; it is the result of the artists’ distillation process to reveal images that show themselves to be veering towards abstraction. The visual links between the various artists’ works stems from the emotional response the works hope to achieve on the viewers.
